Preventing a Diabetic Foot Ulcer
Diabetes is a condition that is not truly understood by those who do not deal with the condition themselves. Granted, even those who are afflicted with diabetes do not always understand all the complications that may result from being diabetic. One such ar

Probably the worst type of injuries is those injuries that are inflicted upon the knees and ankles. The reason knee and ankle injuries are so bad is that they can make life pretty limited because mobility is drastically reduced. If one breaks and arm, one can put the arm in a sling and go on with life. When the legs are hurt, one can even stand must less go on with one’s life. Even worse, an ankle injury is also very susceptible to the onset of a venous ulcer that is an incredibly difficult complication to have to deal with.

When damage occurs to the veins above the ankle, the skin can start to take on an appearance of apparent decomposition. This garish appearance is actually the onset of the venous ulcer. Because whatever injury or damage that affected the veins has reduced circulation of blood through the veins in the ankle, the venous ulcer starts to grow as a result.

If there was any one positive to having a venous ulcer is that is may be an ulcer that can go away without any treatment whatsoever. When the venous ulcer starts to appear on the ankle, then it is highly advisable to have clean bandages applied. The bandages must be replaced every day so as to keep down the possibility of an infection. If an infection does occur, then the ulcer will probably grow worse and will not go away without having visited a doctor for treatment. If the veins are so damaged that their ability to provide decent circulation is no longer a possibility, there may be no way to deal with the problem without performing surgery.

Hopefully, the situation will not reach that critical of a level. If one keeps the ulcer bandaged and the legs elevated, then, hopefully, any serious or severe treatment will not be required to make the ulcer go away.
