While people have a certain general familiarity with ulcers, that general familiarity is usually restricted to peptic ulcers and mouth ulcers. In actuality, there are many different types of ulcers that a person could end up suffering from. One of these types of ulcers is the colon ulcer and it is one of the more painful and difficult types of ulcers to contract.

The most common cause of a colon ulcer is a condition referred to as ulcerative colitis. What this condition is, is an inflammation of the lining of the colon. This inflammation can lead to the development of painful ulcers that may discharge pus of cause significant bleeding. Clearly, a colon ulcer is a serious matter.

The reasons behind the cause of ulcerative colitis and the accompanying colon ulcer problem associate with it are not entirely known. Unlike other types of ulcers, one in the colon does not derive from stress or eating an improper diet, but from a bowel disorder. It is believed that the bowls develop a problem with bacteria in the colon and are not able to effectively use the immune system to eliminate the harmful inflammation effects of the bacteria. This leads to the ulcers forming as the inflammation.

The usually treatment for someone who is suffering from a colon ulcer is outpatient medication care. That is, drugs are prescribed to combat the colon ulcer. While drugs are known to be highly effective, there are those cases which require surgery to repair although this occurs in less that 75% of patients.
